Paul Merrill of WMTW Channel 8 Portland celebrates a murderer and drug dealer in recent tweet.

AP award winning journalist and celebrity interviewer Paul Merrill of Portland’s own WMTW Channel 8 sent out this tweet at 6:34 AM on January 6th, 2017:
“Happy first anniversary to D-Money, Smoothie, and Shifty. #mepolitics”
At first glance this tweet might seem harmless to a casual view, it might even seem like a harmless dig at Gov. Paul LePage, but what is WMTW’s Merrill really saying by tweeting this?
An examination of “D-Money, Smoothie, and Shifty” show exactly who Merrill is celebrating in this tweet.
In 2015 David “Dee Money” Marble Jr., of Rochester, NY was charged with two counts of murder in the shooting deaths of Eric Williams and Bonnie Royer. Reports from the Maine State Police show that they believe that these murders were drug related.
Also in 2015 Police charged Dionhaywood “Smooth” Blackwell, 31, of New Haven, CT with aggravated trafficking in heroin, a Class A felony. When Blackwell was arrested, he was found with fifty grams of heroin.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office has projected over 370 people died in Maine of an opioid overdose in Maine in 2016. This rate is up 50% in just one year.
Merrill failed to mention the grisly nature of the crimes that “Dee Money” and “Smooth” were charged with or the suffering of the victims families.
Maine First Media reached out to Hearst, the parent company of WMTW Channel 8 for a comment about Merrill’s tweet but they refused to comment.
